The Virtues Of Gentleness

Allaah says in the Holy Quran:

فَبِمَا رَحْمَةٍ مِنَ اللَّهِ لِنْتَ لَهُمْ وَلَوْ كُنْتَ فَظًّا غَلِيظَ الْقَلْبِ لانْفَضُّوا مِنْ حَوْلِكَ

"And by the Mercy of Allaah, you dealt with them gently. And had you been severe and hard-hearted, they would have broken away from about you. "
(Ali-Imran: 159)

So this was the secret of the Prophet’s (saw) success. It was his gentleness and kindness towards people that endeared their hearts to him, so much so that they would sacrifice their lives for him. But had he been severe and harsh with them, then they would have dispersed from around him. And it was the mercy of Allaah that caused His Messenger to be so kind and gentle.

The Prophet (saw) is reported to have said:

Whenever gentleness is added to something, it adorns it; and whenever it is withdrawn from something, it leaves it defective.
(Sahih Muslim)

And:
"Indeed Allaah is gentle and loves gentleness, and gives due to gentleness that which He does not give to harshness. "
(Sahih Muslim, Ibn Majah)

He (saw) also said:

“Bashiroo wa laa tunaffiroo, yassiroo wa laa tu’assiroo
Give glad tidings (to the people) and do not repel them; make things easy and do not make them hard.
(Sahih Muslim)

And ‘Umar (ra), when he became the Khalifah, made dua and said: “O Allaah, I am strict, make me soft.”

May Allaah grant us to have this quality as well.
